Have you got a spare room? Find out more about Sizewell C accommodation grants
Starting this week, a series of drop-in events is taking place to help East Suffolk homeowners find out more about funding to help provide accommodation to those working at Sizewell C.
Applications for two new grant schemes will open shortly.
The first of the schemes, the Renovation Grant, will support the conversion of existing homes, spare rooms, annexes or non-residential buildings into safe and suitable residential accommodation for Sizewell C workers.
Grants of up to £7,000 per bedspace are available and will cover structural works, electrical wiring, heating installation, windows and doors, plumbing, installing kitchen and bathroom facilities and additional parking. The grant will also support the creation of Homes of Multiple Occupancy (HMO) to licensable standards.
The second grant scheme, Minor Works Grants, offers financial support of up to £3,000 per bedspace for people wishing to repurpose an unused bedroom within an existing home into accommodation for a Sizewell C worker. Eligible works include redecoration, new floor coverings, electrical improvements, additional heating, replacement windows and the installation of a hand wash basin.
Ahead of applications opening, drop-in events are taking place across East Suffolk enabling people to find out more about the grants. Those interested are encouraged to come along to any of the following sessions:
- Tuesday 19 November at Leiston Library (9.30am – 12.30pm)
- Wednesday 6 December at Southwold Library (10am – 1pm)
- Tuesday 7 January at Framlingham Library (9.30am – 12.30pm)

Cllr David Beavan, East Suffolk’s cabinet member for Housing said: “The construction of Sizewell C will bring workers into the district who will be looking for accommodation in and around the Sizewell area. Property owners with a spare room, annexe or garage who are interested in converting this space into a safe and comfortable living space for a Sizewell C worker are welcome to apply for funding to help bring this space to a lettable standard.”
